The U.S. Federal Appeals Court has upheld a law requiring ByteDance to sell TikTok, or else the platform will be banned in the country. TikTok plans to appeal this decision to the Supreme Court.
The court emphasized that the law resulted from the collaborative efforts of both parties—Republicans and Democrats—and is part of measures aimed at addressing national security threats associated with China.
The U.S. Department of Justice believes that through TikTok, China could subtly influence the information consumed by American users.
In response, the Chinese Embassy in Washington characterized the law as a "commercial robbery" and warned the U.S. to approach the situation with caution.
