During the meeting, the Maltese leader highlighted the intensification of bilateral relations, made possible by Uzbekistan's open and pragmatic foreign policy. Despite the considerable geographical distance between the two countries, their interests and objectives foster the development of comprehensive cooperation.
Special attention was given to issues of mutual support for candidacies and initiatives in international organizations such as the UN and OSCE.
Over the past year, a new phase has emerged in the relationship between the states. In September 2024, the foreign ministers of Uzbekistan and Malta held their first productive meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. In January 2025, Malta appointed its ambassador to Uzbekistan, with residence in Moscow, and the first round of inter-ministerial consultations took place in Valletta.
Abat Faizullaev has been serving as Uzbekistan's ambassador to Italy since November 2023, representing the country in international organizations in Rome, such as FAO, WHO, and UNIDO. In December 2024, he was also appointed as the first ambassador of Uzbekistan to Cyprus.
From 2020 to 2023, he held the position of Uzbekistan's ambassador to Austria, served as a non-resident ambassador in Hungary, and represented the country at the OSCE and other international organizations in Vienna.
