Medicines are among the most sold products in Uzbekistan. In some areas of the capital, the number of pharmacies even surpasses that of grocery stores.
According to data from the Tax Committee provided to Kun.uz, in 2024, out of the total expenditure on medicines amounting to 15.7 trillion sums, 4 trillion sums were spent on locally produced drugs, while 15.7 trillion sums were spent on imported medications.
The highest per capita spending was recorded in:
▪️ Tashkent – 1.7 million sums;
▪️ Bukhara region – 746 thousand sums;
▪️ Samarkand region – 660.7 thousand sums.
The lowest expenditures were:
▪️ Kashkadarya region – 308.9 thousand sums;
▪️ Republic of Karakalpakstan – 302.3 thousand sums;
▪️ Surkhandarya region – 289.5 thousand sums.
In absolute figures, the most money spent on medicines was in Tashkent (5 trillion sums), followed by Samarkand (2.6 trillion sums) and Fergana regions (1.5 trillion sums).
The main expenditure items are medicines for the treatment of:
▪️ cardiovascular diseases;
▪️ infectious diseases;
▪️ pain relief;
▪️ nervous system disorders;
▪️ gastrointestinal diseases.
Import of Medicines
According to the Customs Committee, in 2024, Uzbekistan imported pharmaceutical and medical products worth 1.74 billion dollars. Of this, 1.5 billion dollars were retail medicines.
For comparison, during the same period, the following were imported:
▪️ meat products – 0.5 billion dollars;
▪️ flour and flour products – 258 million dollars;
▪️ vegetable oils – 373 million dollars.
The total food import amounted to 3.92 billion dollars.
