Uzbekistan aims to launch a competitive electricity market by 2026.

Starting in 2026, Uzbekistan will launch a competitive wholesale electricity market. This announcement was made by Sherzod Khojayev, the Director of the Agency for the Development and Regulation of the Energy Market, during an interview with the O’zbekiston 24 television channel.

According to him, several international consultants, including the German company DNV and the American firm BCG, were engaged in developing technical tasks for the trading platform. He added that the electronic trading platform will gradually start operating from 2026.

Recall that in May 2024, the Cabinet approved the regulations for the Agency for the Development and Regulation of the Energy Market. The agency's tasks include ensuring the phased establishment of competitive wholesale and retail electricity markets. Starting in 2026, it will approve the rates and other payments for electricity supply.

In December of last year, the president emphasized the need to transition to a competitive market model in the energy sector during a meeting with entrepreneurs. The head of state also announced the launch of a wholesale online electricity market in Uzbekistan in 2025.
