Around 2,000 illegal dumpsites have been found in Uzbekistan.

The "Uzbekcosmos" agency has identified a total of 1,928 illegal waste disposal sites across Uzbekistan as a result of its space monitoring efforts.

The total area of illegal dumps is approximately 721 hectares, of which 123 cover an area of 255.5 hectares and are registered outside waste disposal sites, while 1,805 cover an area of 465.2 hectares as illegal waste landfills.

Across the republic, the number of illegal dumps is as follows:

  • Republic of Karakalpakstan – 243 (63.2 hectares);
  • Khorezm region – 168 (22 hectares);
  • Bukhara region – 92 dumps (91.7 hectares);
  • Navoi region – 216 (112.4 hectares);
  • Samarkand region – 147 (41.2 hectares);
  • Kashkadarya region – 81 (79.3 hectares);
  • Andijan region – 180 (42 hectares);
  • Namangan region – 195 (65.2 hectares);
  • Fergana region – 164 (51 hectares);
  • Tashkent region – 363 (98.6 hectares);
  • Jizzakh region – 39 (30.44 hectares);
  • Surkhandarya region – 40 (20.11 hectares).

The agency notes that the establishment of such illegal waste landfills has a significant negative impact on the environment and ecology, as well as contributing to the increase of harmful insects, infectious diseases, and the development of lung cancer and respiratory illnesses in people.
