The Chinese publication Autohome conducted extensive testing of over 50 models of electric vehicles and hybrids to assess their performance in winter conditions. The tests took place in the autonomous region of Inner Mongolia, where winter temperatures can drop below minus 40 degrees.
The average temperature during the tests was minus 20 degrees, and the vehicles were evaluated for real-world range under conditions similar to everyday use.
How the Testing was Conducted
Autohome experts tested the vehicles on a route divided into two stages: the first half was completed at an average speed of 70 km/h, while the second half was at 40 km/h. This approach helped to recreate realistic operating conditions.
The tests lasted 8 days, and live broadcasts were available to follow their progress.
Best Electric Vehicle for Winter
The leader among electric cars was the Luxeed R7 coupe SUV from Chery and Huawei. Its rear-wheel-drive version, Max, achieved a range of 402.6 km on a single charge, which is 50.2% of the manufacturer's claimed range of 802 km.
The Luxeed R7 is built on the E0X architecture, shared with the Exlantix models, and has dimensions comparable to the BMW X6. The vehicle is equipped with an electric motor producing 292 hp (in the rear-wheel-drive version) and battery options of 82 or 100 kWh, providing a range of up to 802 km according to the CLTC cycle.
Second place went to the Xiaomi SU7, which managed to cover 385 km (47.5% of the claimed 800 km). Closing the top three was the Zeekr 7X, which traveled 364.4 km (51.7% of the claimed 705 km).
0Best Hybrid for Winter
Among hybrids, the top spot was taken by the Lixiang L9 Ultra, equipped with a 52.3 kWh battery. It achieved a range of 164.7 km, which is 58.8% of the claimed range of 280 km.
1In second place was the Avatr 12 Ultra sportback, which covered 150 km (61.2% of the claimed distance). The Avatr 07 Max crossover secured third place with a result of 137 km (59.5% of the claimed 230 km).
2The tests demonstrated that even in extreme sub-zero temperatures, modern electric vehicles and hybrids show commendable results. The Luxeed R7 and Lixiang L9 Ultra have proven to be reliable choices for operation in harsh winter conditions.
